MA Fine Art and Printmaking students from local Middlesex University will take over the Ply Gallery in the historic Hornsey Town Hall building for one week in April, just weeks before it is closed to the public to be redeveloped as a boutique hotel.

From 1st - 6th April the 20 students from a variety of disciplines will exhibit their work as part of their self-curated show entitled ‘Please Wait to be Called’, in honour of the gallery's former use as the council’s rates office. Today, the Ply Gallery has made itself known as a small, yet successful contemporary space, that made a home within the walls of Grade II* listed building.

‘Please Wait to be Called’ will showcase a series of artworks that explore a range of topics from possessive acts of romance, Chinese women’s self-representation under the influence of consumer culture and an exploration of the significance of public spaces; to abstract printmaking, utopian universes and a perspective and perception altering perspex installation.

Elsie Bryant, MA Fine Art and Social Practice student at Middlesex University said: “All of us who will be displaying our work at the Ply Gallery, as part of our ‘Please Wait to be Called’ show, recognise the significance of being some of the last people to exhibit within the space.

We are keen to honour the importance of the architecturally impressive site with our own artistic contributions. We really hope that the people of Crouch End and surrounding areas

will join us in April at one of the gallery’s final shows.”

The exhibition opens on Monday 1st April and will be open from 11am to 4.30pm daily until Saturday 6th April.

Later this year Hornsey Town Hall will close its doors to the public ahead of a major redevelopment. Join us in the Hornsey Town Hall cafe on 24th March for a free creative poetry and zine-making workshop exploring your memories of the historic building and visions for the future of public space.

There will be the option to include your creation in an exhibition at the Ply Gallery in April before the building closes for the redevelopment work.
